fwiw, Ive resolved this by using fopen(), so I'm happy (as long as one works).

I am still mildly curious though as to why CURL apparantly isnt supported in php aso's 4.x though.

It works for me in php 4 but not in php 5.  What does phpinfo tell you?

I already checked that, im on 'steve', using PHP 4.4.4 and curl isnt enabled.

Im fine since fopen() works but surprised.

CURL should work in PHP4 on all servers. If it doesn't, you can probably have it enabled by sending a support ticket.
Eh.
