After many delays and discussions over getting the service up and running for a decent price, we're now able to offer domain names with the purchase of A Small Orange web hosting. The cost is just $10 per year and is completely integrated with our signup process, so you get your domain and hosting all in one package. Future renewals will be made automatically, or you can transfer to another registrar at any time. We do not lock domains registered through us (unlike many of our competitors), so you are free to do with the domain what you want.

And if there are any problems during the signup process, please send an email to billing@asmallorange.com. We'll work with you to get all the kinks out of the system (although, it has been tested extensively).

Alright Tim, way to expand.  I know you'll hook a lot of new customers with this.

Now that you're in the know on domains though, how does godaddy.com offer them for so cheap??? wink.gif

I still don't know. The registrar we're using provides us with an API to integrate orders with (so the process goes butter smooth), and they do all the magic behind their curtain. I suppose it's all about running a clean shop (much like we do here), and they must do that well. I'd venture a guess that 98% of their customers never actually deal with a human, so it's just about having an efficient website smile.gif

This is wicked! I think I'm going to transfer my domain from EV1 to ASO, also, do you have any kind of web interface where you can manage your domain?

Nope, nothing that I know of. I don't have transfers enabled, anyways. I still think if you are transferring your domain, you should do it to godaddy.com. We're offering this service as a convenience to those signing up. We're not trying to pretend to be a registrar tongue.gif

Maybe GoDaddy's prices are low because they're getting a lower price from ICANN than the price you're getting from registrar you're dealing with.

Yeah, probably. I just wish Godaddy.com would pass that discount on to us. They charge several thousand dollars just to get access to their API :|

Very nice Tim. Your company has expanded considerably since that first post over at Neowin.

When my year is up with MyDomain I'm moving over to ASO.

How about current customers? Do they have access to buying a domain?

It's only for new accounts right now. I don't want to act as a registrar when you can just buy from godaddy.com, get the same thing, and save some money. This is just a convenience for new customers smile.gif

I just received an email to renew one of my domains that I have with register.com and I see that the pricing is outrageous.  Tim, I know you don't wanna be a registrar, but I would be saving money switching my domain(s) to you and for the ease of having it all in one place I would rather pay you the little difference than switching to godaddy.  Here is what I was quoted and you can see why I ask, "can I please switch the domain to you as an existing customer when they are up eventhough you say its for new customers only?"

..ICANN only charges 20-30cents per domain name, it's the registry that charges the most. Verisign's minimum price is about $6 for .com/.net domain names..

of course, if you're working for a registrar, you can get it for $7  rolleyes.gif

What kind of domain is it? If you have a .cc, or something else obscure, they tend to run in the $30 range, if I remember correctly. It's the .net's and .com's that are only $9 or $10 per year. I'm not sure if Tim is offering anything but basic .net/.com, he'll have to clarify.
