Apple-X has been interested in getting XMPP (aka Jabber) accounts at something other than a free server like jabber.org, and probably offering accounts to other people as well.  I've noticed some other hosting services throwing in Jabber for free, but we'd definitely be willing to pay an extra few bucks a month for it; we're definitely not considering leaving ASO.

My question is, what do you think about doing this? We're all getting sick of AOL Instant Messenger, and it'd be nice having a personalised JID, not to mention it might speed up Jabber adoption (hey, an IM system's only good when other people are using it too) and it opens up other possibilities like notifying users of updates to our site via Jabber.  Ultimately I think this would be a great addition to ASO's hosting, since along with websites and email, IM is as popular as ever.  What do you think?

Apologies for bumping such an old post... but I would be interested as well in setting up Jabber services in the future. Any update on if/when we could get such functionality?

I know it is not the same as having your own Jabber server, but Google Talk is one of Google's latest creations... and it uses Jabber. So, if you are just looking for an alternative to MSN, Yahoo!, or AIM, you might want to check it out.

Just use iChat or Adium or one of the other clients that are available they can all connect to Google Talk apparently, haven't tried it myself though as IM bores me these days.

I'm using Gaim. I connected to it, just for the hell of it. It's working fine.
Eh.

I've got a Mac.... so [GoogleTalk is] a no-go.

Who told you that?  As mentioned above, you can access the Google Talk network through a variety of third-party clients, including iChat and Adium.

Ah silly me... I was thinking about the Google Talk app itself, not the actual network  rolleyes.gif

It's good to know that you can connect to it via iChat and other Jabber-compatible clients.

Just curious, besides personal preference is there a reason you would not install a Google app. on your computer?

For one, Google Talk, like the Google Toolbar, updates without user intervention. Usually a firewall can catch these changes, but even still I don't like apps that update themselves silently.

Second, I just don't like Google's way of allaying my concerns about privacy and data security. They have unfathomable amounts of data and remain silent on what they do with that info, for how long they keep it, how secure they keep it, etc etc. All one gets is 'Don't be evil' and 'no comment.' Google has the potential to do much good for the internet, but right now it's a very young company with very young, idealistic, and suddenly wealthy leaders, and simply I choose not to trust them with my data. Folks can do their own research and come to their own conclusions, but that's just my take on it. smile.gif

Who really cares what info they have though? As long as they don't have your social or your credit card number what does the rest really matter anyway?

Bump. SSL enabled jabber would rock. smile.gif Dreamhost offers it, but not a big fan.

You would be surprised what you can get without those pieces of information. Just ask all those AOL clients who were identified from so-called "sanitized" information that was leaked. And that was managed by people who weren't really that gung ho about finding people.

Google may not have any malicious intents but their data warehouse is a ticking bomb.

Sorry for bumping this topic again, but reading through the forums (i am a new customer) i found it. I confirm that clients (at least i) would be willing to pay to get this great possiblity.
This would open thousands of new possibilites.. great idea IMO.

Coincidentally, I found this old topic two days ago myself.  I considered bumping it.  I'm glad you did.

I think having a Jabber server would add value to ASO hosting.  My vote's a "Yay" if anyone is counting.

Sorry to jump on a sort of old topic, but this would be great, you can now message people from phpBB 3 via Jabber.

I would also love to have a XMPP/Jabber service available.

Jabber would be great.  It's the only thing that made me look at Dreamhost.  I've been thinking of using Google Apps for it, but using it for only that looks complicated, and it would still go through Google's XMPP server(s).
