Hi All

Well, I have now actually done it... well... Tim did it really... biggrin.gif  I have moved my moderately sized forum from oneandone in the UK, to ASO.  I still have to transfer the main .com domain across which I will request the transfer of today - but apart from that, I am delighted to be live on ASO with Tim and the crew.

As soon as the .com domain is completed I will be looking to migrate from phpBB2 to vB3.0.1 as soon as possible.

My site is a musical site with content of interest to music publishers, brass players, composers, bands, instrument resellers, students etc... - in fact, to anyone with an interest in (predominantly brass) music making.  It is called theMouthPiece...

Great to be live on ASO at last...smile.gif

ALso - a public thank you to you Tim for providing what I can only describe as fantastic customer support.  I sincerely hope ASO goes from strength to strenght.

Glade to hear the move went well but I'd recommend moving to IPB if you must move off of phpBB2.

We did, resulting in the disaster known as the Dastardly Delta Downtime Days, heh
No, really, I have no biased against it, but I much prefer the free alternative. Even if vB is better, I don't think that it's (limitted number of) extra features constitute $160.
And I don't trust any program that makes it so easy to shoot yourself in the foot with (You could say that it's the users fault that vB3.0.11 had an error allowing for massive CPU usage, but I don't like that it's possible for a user to make such errors).
If I ever host a forum, I'll be sticking with IPB smile.gif

I don't think that IPB is worth the $200 price tag either.

By the way, the first thing mentioned to someone who asks about how to obtain IPB on their forums is to buy a license so don't tell me that it is free. Especially since like Real and Real Player (at least last check), the download link appears to be deliberately hidden on their site implying that it is pay only.

Regarding shooting yourself in the foot, it is a bug; bugs are to be expected from all software.

I don't consider it free considering how deceitful IPS is regarding the price.

I agree that I have become more and more annoyed with IPS' licensing schemes.

"Deceitful"? It's available as an unlimited free trial. If you like it, you can buy it. Where's the lying in that?

They make it difficult to find the link (It took me several tries spaced across several months to find it) and insist on purchasing a license in every thread asking about how to obtain their software on their forums. They neglect to mention that you can just download it for free.

It is easy to find when you know where it is (everything is easy when you know how) but it is almost impossible for someone new to the site to find it.

They do everything possible to prevent someone from downloading it for free without charging for it. Just like Real Networks (which is as well known as Microsoft, except for the opposite reason).

I remember when I created a simple forum (which I didn't think would last and it didn't); I used IPB and a friend asked me how I got it. I told him I downloaded it from the official invision site. He told me that he didn't know it was free as he could not find the download link.

By the way, why doesn't someone here just register with IPS's support forums and ask how to obtain IPB, they will instantly insist on a license.

Edit: Also, I think we should stop ruining John's topic and start a new topic on IPB...
