This is not a complaint, since it's no big deal but why do hosts always make you create databases with cPanel and not directly in phpMyAdmin?

One of two things I can think of: 1) control - cPanel makes sure that in a shared hosting environment then you keep the "username_" prefix, 2) permissions - it is cleaner to give the cPanel service the permissions to create tables for you rather than letting you have those permissions. Those are just guesses, though.
