Last week I tried to update my site with the latest articles I have written and I got this error message:
Building category '3' failed: Build error in template 'Category Archive': Error in <MTEntries> tag: Error in <MTExtraFields> tag: Reading '/home/orange/public_html/images/picture_4_image.jpg' failed: Reading file '/home/user/public_html/images/picture_4_image.jpg' failed: Exception 435: unable to open image `ange/public_html/images/picture_4_image.jpg': @ error/blob.c/OpenBlob/2588
Tech support tried very hard and couldn't figure out the problem. They suggested I post my problem here. Anyone have any thoughts?
getting an error message technical support can't fix

It would have been helpful if you told us what you were using. I assume you are using Moveable Type, is that correct?
Have you been with A Small Orange for a while, or are you new here? A quick search indicates that the type of error you are receiving can happen when there is a problem with ImageMagick, an image manipulation library. Does your server have ImageMagick installed? I didn't see it on the server we are on.
http://jao.asmallora...com/phpinfo.php
Also, I noticed in your error messages this:
Exception 435: unable to open image `ange/public_html/images/picture_4_image.jpg': @ error/blob.c/OpenBlob/2588
Did you modify the error message to hide your account name? The account names you have in your error messages are:
/home/orange/public_html/
/home/user/public_html/
ange/public_html/
You've got a different account name in your path for each error message. Is there an error in your Moveable Type configuration file or in your script's configuration panel? I would have to think that could be a possible problem.
I'm sure others will chime in to help get you an answer. Sit tight and confirm for us what you are using.

HI Billzo,
Thanks for your response. In answer to your questions, I have been with Small Orange for many years, since 06, I think. I'm using moveable type and can't seem to find any technical support from them, especially since I believe I may be using the free software, also since 06. Perhaps that is the problem and my moveable type is probably pretty out of date. My tech friend also thought there was a problem with ImageMagick, but small orange says they have it on their server, so I'm not sure if that is another piece of data that it is a moveable type problem?
And yes, the tech guy suggested I change the file name to hide the account name so when you saw "ange" it was a typo on my part. It was supposed to be orange. And actually, it's not the account name per se. That was just the name of the file I was trying to upload. Perhaps that is a clue to the problem? Maybe there is some kind of operator error that I am not aware of...
As for whether a small orange has image magick on the server, I wonder if the problem could be that it got moved (since the tech guy said they had it) rather than it not being there? But I imagined that would be something the tech people would have checked for...
Thanks again! I'll sit tight but I really appreciate your response so far!!

A few steps (you may have doen them already):
1) verify the images and files you are referencing exist
2) double check your tags config, especially if you've changed anything recently
3) make sure MT is up to date
4) check logs to make sure there has been no tampering
I haven't used MT for a long time so trying to recall some of its idiosyncracies

Obsolescence is just a lack of imagination.

That certainly could be a problem. Did you make any changes at all to any configuration settings or anything? If you didn't make any changes, then it is possible there is a conflict with your outdated version of Moveable Type. Updating to the latest version would be a logical step (if you did not make any changes on the account). Naturally, backup your database and files before updating if you do.

A simple test would be to write a short PHP script that uses ImageMagick and see if it works or not. Maybe I'll do that later. If ASO support says ImageMagick is installed, I am inclined to believe them. A search of Yahoo shows that people have installed ImageMagick and it doesn't show anything in phpinfo because it isn't a PHP module. That's why it isn't in phpinfo(). I didn't know that yesterday.

Sometimes older scripts don't work with newer libraries. If you haven't updated Moveable Type for six years, you might want to do it now.
