Hey,

My friend made a site for me and got me set up with a shared hosting plan. Today I added another domain to the plan by using the "addon domains" function in Cpanel. I am now trying to set up wordpress for my new site. I followed wordpresses instructions and created a database and user called tailored_comedy, and my new domain "justcomedies.com" now displays index/of when I type the url in. I downloaded wordpress and configured the wp.config file like it told me to, but I got stuck when I got to the next step "upload the files".

It says to upload the files where I want my website to appear- so that would be the "root directory", I believe. I don't really know what my root directory is for www.justcomedies.com. Does anyone know where I can find this and how to upload files to it? I downloaded "filezilla" in case that helps.

Assuming you already set filezilla up, you upload the files to public_html.

Is this where I save the files to? Which part of it do I save them to? Whjen I click "add file" it makes me add them one by one, and I don't know what order I have to do them to make it work.

I tried to set up filezilla but it was really hard. I clicked on configure FTP client in my only ftp account and followed the instructions but it dind't work. I even went on a windows computer so I could use filezilla.

Am I supposed to make a new FTP account for justcomedies.com? The only way I can make a new one is @tailoredfreelancing.com, so I don't know how to make one for @justcomedies.com. I don't have that option. I hope the picture links work I have never tried using them before.

Sorry if these are nooby questions, I tried googling for answers but I have spent a couple hours already trying to figure this out and it's tough. Oh and I accidentaly have justcomedys in the first picture I don't know how to make it go away. I just have control over justcomedies not justcomedy.

If this is an add-on domain, do not upload the files to public_html - that'll overwrite your main site. Also, I'd avoid the built-in file manager for anything but the simplest of tasks and use a proper desktop FTP client like Filezilla instead.

When you created the addon, it would have set up the folder for you and you'd have had the choice to alter it. Similarly, it will normally have set up an FTP account for you that has access to just that domain (although you can also use your cPanel login and upload files to any of your sites). You'll be able to see any FTP accounts you have created in the "FTP Accounts" section of cPanel, and your add-on domains will have their folder listed in the Addon Domains section of cPanel. Based on your screenshot, you need to upload the files to public_html/www.justcomedies.com.

Having the www.justcomedy.com folder won't harm anything. If you want to make it go away then delete the add-on domain from cPanel (which I'm presuming you set up to make it create the folder) and then delete the folder through FTP.

Ok. So. Justcomedies.com has a document root of /public_html/www.justcomedies.com

So that is definitely where I want to put the files.

This is the FTP account associated with justcomedies.com
/home/tailored/public_html/www.justcomedies.com

So it's kind of the the same, which is nice! That means I just need to get the files onto there and everything will be good (I hope).

I followed the steps for fillzilla from 1-8.

However, when I open up the site manager feature, I am shown this:

Do I need to add a new site to "Select Entry", and if so, would the site be ftp.justcomedies.com? What do I put for host/port/user/passwordaccount? I feel like I have lots of different usernames and accounts with ASO, and I'm not sure which values to put in.

As well as being the people who host your website, "Host" is the technical word for the name given to a computer. What you need to put in there is your domain name (just the name - justcomedies.com - without any http:// or anything else) or your server's full domain name (it'll be something.asmallorange.com). Logon type will be something like "password" and you'll need to use the username and password you setup for the domain or your cPanel username and password.

Alternatively, looking at the earlier screenshots then cPanel will let you download some kind of config file for Filezilla. I don't know how it works, but it might be worth trying that way to make sure that all of your settings are correct.

Hmm I tried using all the usernames and passwords I could think of. It's like trying to speak a language when I don't know the alphabet- now my other website, tailoredfreelancing.com, is down and I can't access my cpanel or account center. I think I broke something.

I used the username and password for my cpanel in filezilla, then for my SLQ, but no luck. I think I might need to pay someone money to figure this out for me, because I am just making things worse at this point. It's going to be a bit hard because ASO only lets you use filezilla if you have a windows computer and not with a mac, so I would have to get someone to come to my house to fix it for me (I can't just bring my laptop to university and drop into a computer science class)

This is what it looks like, anyways.

I don't know what port to put in or what my account is even if I know my cpanel username and password. I'm going to try a bit more over the weekend and hope I don't break anythingelse  but I will probably have to get some help from someone who knows wordpress better than I.

Not sure how to edit a post- just want to let everyone know my website was not down because of ASO having problems, it's cause I kept trying to figure out filezilla so I guess I kept trying to log in too many times with filezilla and they thought it was a hacker or something bad and blocked my website temporarily. Everything works now on my old website.

Looking at your last screenshot, you don't have a port. A port is like the channel that you communicate on - if you're on the wrong channel then the server won't hear you. Most of the time the default one is right (port 21 in this case). If you put that in then you should be able to log in.

Basically, there are two main accounts you can use for FTP:

1) Your cPanel login. That will let you have full access to all of your websites and a lot of the folders above - basically, everything that you saw in the cPanel File Manager. It should be easier to remember, but you could accidentally mess up the wrong site.

2) The FTP account that was setup when you created your addon domain. This should be tied down to the site that it was create for and so could potentially be given to a 3rd party to manage that site. The password will be whatever you setup when you created it. If you don't remember, use the FTP Accounts section of cPanel to change the password.

From what I know, ASO do have rules to stop brute-force attempts on passwords, so if you've tried logging in a few times and failed then you might have triggered that. I believe it clears after a few hours, though.

Also, ASO don't limit the clients you use at all. The clients listed in the FTP Accounts are apps that cPanel (the company that make the control panel that ASO buy) suggest for the different platforms. You can use Filezilla on Mac if you want, or any other client. cPanel just try to make it easier for you by giving you downloads of configs for their preferred clients.

Cool! I managed to get it to connect! I just typed in my username and password and the port (21) also worked!

I tried to upload the wordpress and so I dragged and dropped the wordpress files into the big list of files shown in my screenshot. It kep asking me if I wanted to rewrite stuff, so I said yes- but then the transfer stopped because I had "Too many connections from this ISP". What did I do wrong this time? :S I was using my cpanel username and password since I couldn't figure out how to use the other one (I can find the username but not sure where I can find the pass)... do you think I maybe accidentaly was rewriting the wordpress files for my other site? The other site is still up but now I am worried,

PS thanks for all your help!

Not sure what causes it, but that screenshot looks like the whole of Windows is slightly screwed up!

The only thing I can remember from when I last used FTP is that ASO seems to work better in "passive mode". There should be a tickbox to enable passive mode, but I can't find any reference to it online at the moment because FileZilla make a server as well as a client and the server results are swamping it all out.

So- apparently ASO comes with a cool program called Fantastico which does everything for you! Wish I knew that a while ago- thanks Maria from customer support for telling me!

Fantastico may set everything up with a click, but by-and-large, you are better off installing it yourself rather than using Fantastico.

Another vote for "avoid Fantastico as much as possible". I can't think of a proper analogy, but the best I can come up with is that it is like loose stabilisers on a bike - it might help you a bit at first, but it is a liability really and you're better off learning to do it properly (only installing Wordpress manually vs via Fantastico has an almost zero learning curve, especially when compared to cycling).
