Really stupid question, but I can't find an answer that seems to apply here. I have a domain that only works in some older browsers, mainly Firefox <4, if you add www to the address. It works fine without it in modern versions of IE, Firefox, and Chrome, and I can't get better info on the browser versions that are broken. Any ideas what's going on?

Sounds like a slightly mis-configured DNS. www.example.com and example.com are *generally* the same location (often with one redirecting to the other) but they don't *have* to be the same. I've hit a good number of professional and big corporate sites (mainly Windows hosted, IIRC) that work with a www. but not without it.

If you tell us the domain then we could check the records. Either that or if it is registered with ASO then the techs might be able to help if you put in a support ticket.

For technical detail: If you've got ASO set up as your NS records then the techs need to fix it (unless cPanel lets you have control, which I don't remember it having). If you've got your NS setup so that you have control over all of the domain records (A, NAME, MX, etc) then you need your server's IP in the "@" (no-www.) and "www" entries, and I suspect you're missing the "@" one or have a wrong IP.

The browsers aren't broken.  I'm not sure what the problem is at this time, but you are going to have to give us a URL so we can research it.

Many people don't realize that "www" is a subdomain and is not necessary and, in my opinion, should not be used at all.  It's a holdover from the 1990s "world wide web".

I disagree about the use of www but that's a discussion for another thread(and there are several on it already). It is however not necessary, unless the domain has been configured that way.

"unless the domain has been configured that way" - that's a double-sided interpretation ;) www. is unnecessary if the domain has been configured to have @ and www as the same, but is necessary if it was configured to have them different (or to not have www).

www=@ is common, but AFAIK it isn't a default. DNS is used by HTTP, but it isn't the only use, so I don't think it is default as you can't guarantee that www and no-www need to be the same. Wrapper apps and interfaces might make that assumption, but it isn't in the underlying system that "unless otherwise told, @ = www".

As for the "do or don't" argument, I generally prefer domains without the www. (like ibboard.co.uk) but I've also got www.hiveworldterra.co.uk, which looks a little unbalanced without the www., plus it has forums.hiveworldterra.co.uk.

That's because he didn't have a problem - he was hosted on Yahoo and so was just hijacking the thread for a bit of spamming. He should be gone now :)
