Just doing some updates after a few months off, and I see a folder inside my public_html called "colo", with a few hundred spammy appearing html files. They're all dated 3/21/2011, when I was hosted on Arzt (I'm now on moro).

Curiously, the files are a combo of my normal home page (my background image and footer etc) with hundreds of images interspersed, like something loaded my normal page, modified it, then saved it elsewhere.

I can obviously just delete them, but I'd like to know where they came from, and why.

I can't comment on why, but the first place to start looking for where/when is in your site's log files.

Good suggestion, but the logs only go back to August. It's a small site with a dozen invited friends only, so I don't keep logs very long.

I got something like this too. The folder was called "specialty" and had a bunch of spammy looking HTML files. I deleted it. I didn't put it there. Files were dated a few months ago.

Obviously, the spam came from a guy that causes trouble or conns people. Thed best way to handle this - delete the files. If they come back, report them. Its as simple as that.
