Is it possible to move dynamic sites in that manner? I have around 1 dozen sites. Some sites are based on Drupal and others use similar PHP/MySQL scripts that need installation.
I'm asking this as re-installing them on VPS is not an option for me due to the time and effort involved. Thanks.

From memory - though it's been a while since I did it - you can pretty much do this automatically. If you enter your login details for the shared account into the VPS management software then it'll grab a copy of everything and transfer it for you. Then you just need to update the nameservers/A records to point to the new server and you're set!

If you get a cPanel VPS (which all of them are, except Developer) then you should be able to do an import as David said. That's how the Techs do it as well. It should (in theory) be a smooth transfer, but I'd always account for the possibility of having to tweak some permissions or some paths in a database or config file somewhere.
The more information you provide, the better answer the community can give.

That will be excellent if I can do it at all.
Is there a KB or wiki article by ASO on this method, I'm sure other customers must have asked about this process.

I tried the cPanel to WHM backup and restore option, the tar file did get stored on VPS but it won't get restored.
WHM would give a blank screen on clicking restore option. So I think this option will not work for me.

I don't think you even need to do that? There's an option in my WHM labelled "Copy an account from another server" which does it all via SSH - no backing up needed

Thanks, and what if I have an account with the same name on the new server? Will that be overwritten.
Although, I did find that option in WHM after trying the backup restore option, but this point made me not go ahead with account transfer.

I've no idea if it'd be overwritten to be honest - if you were concerned then you could always rename the account that's already on your new server while you did the copy. Although obviously if it's a brand new server then there'd be nothing of note in your newly created account anyway!
