I own a domain for tinkering and also for a little nicer looking e-mail address than I would be able to have otherwise. I would like to install qmail but I haven't been successful in compiling anything on the actual site. I know ASO officially uses sendmail, but is it a different iteration of the software for each user like php? Would it be as easy as running
/sbin/init.d/sendmail stop
?

Is this even possible without a VPS?

Compilers are not available on shared hosting, nor is control of the sendmail server, which is shared. If you need to compile specific programs or need that low level control then a VPS would be your best solution.
Obsolescence is just a lack of imagination.

Sign up at ASO and enjoy friendly, quality hosting services. Use coupon code no2512 and save 15% or coupon code 2152on and take $5 off. Valid on both Shared Hosting and VPS plans.
