Well, new VPS is up and running. WOW this is fast compared with the old one. Liking new Virtuozzo, too :)

The new VPS server nodes we're putting together are beasts compared to the old ones. You can see the stats on the VPS page of our website.

The new virtuozzo also gives us a lot more flexibility and allows us to deploy much faster. (i.e. typical turnaround is more on par with shared hosting, rather than the 48 hours or so on our old VPS setup)

Yeah it certainly seems it, Frank - I was out most of yesterday and sent a ticket requesting the new server and it was up and running in an hour at most. I'd not planned to deploy anything on to it for at least a week yet but it's basically ready now - gives me plenty of time to play, I guess!

Damnit, I missed this announcement and I missed the (extremely) short offer :( At least I've got the next week off, so I'll be able to get things set up now. Definitely looks like some good improvements - IIRC Developer now gets treble memory (at least it is 50% more than I have, and I should have the upgrade) :)

Theres a reddit campaign going on right now for 33% off. I'm sure if you email billing we can work something out.

I've submitted a ticket to Billing, briefly confused Amanda (because I was thinking about upgrades instead of brand new packages) and have now placed my order. You definitely do well on customer care :)

Yeah, it looks like treble memory, double disk space and I'm assuming double bandwidth. I didn't look at the server specs, but I'm sure they're an improvement. No need to pay for the memory upgrade, and I might even move back to Apache instead of using Lighttpd.

Now I've just got to get everything moved over and set up again :D

I'm trying to work out if it is worthwhile for me to upgrade to the new VPS plans but can't find the details of the previous plans to compare, I'm on the old Personal VPS plan with the $10/month 10GB backup service along with a $25/month upgrade to the amount of memory on the Professional plan.

Would it be worth my while to upgrade to the new Personal plan? I would keep the backup service and add cPanel so that would reduce it to a total of $75/month instead of $85, so a decent saving but I'm not sure what would be an upgrade and would would be a downgrade etc, not to mention having to update all the dns server records scattered across all the different registrars etc if I do switch.

The old personal plan was:

256MB RAM (Your upgrade would put you at 512MB)
150G Bandwidth
10G Storage

The new personal plan is:

768MB RAM
500GB Bandwidth
30GB Storage

Since you have the backup package as well ($10/month), and want cPanel ($10/month) it would put your total at $70/month. $15 less than what you're paying now for 50% more RAM, 333% more Bandwidth, 300% more storage space. I'd say its worth the upgrade, particularly if you grab on to one of the coupons we have floating around.

As for having to change DNS, there really isnt much to it. All you have to do is change your glue record with your primary domains registrar to point to the new IP addresses after you've moved everything over. All the existing domains that are pointed at that DNS server will update accordingly.

On top of what already sounds like a great deal, the hardware the new VPS's are on are top of the line. You'll get much better performance out of them. We've had quite a few customers take the plunge, so I'm sure they will attest to that.

Oops, that was quite the math fail on my behalf, the upgrade definitely seems worth it then.

Can you please explain that a little more? The domain for the actual VPS is registered with ASO (have never gotten around to transferring it like I probably should) so if I update the glue record (not sure what that is) here to point to the new IP(s) then all the custom name servers setup for each of the accounts on my VPS will automagically update?

Basically a glue record is a DNS record that points name servers to their proper IP addresses. For example, you could have the name servers for 1000 different domains set to:

ns1.yourcompany.com
ns2.yourcompany.com

The glue records for these hosts are set to 1.1.1.1 and 2.2.2.2 respectively. If for some reason you need to move ns2 to another IP address, say, 3.3.3.3, it would just take an update of the glue record (and a subsequent modification of the yourcompany.com zone file) to makes the change filter down to the 1000 domains that use those DNS servers.

I dont recall off hand how to modify the glue records in the client area, but if you open a ticket I'm sure we can figure it out for you.

Again, this is something you'll want to do after everything has been migrated to the new vps and you're confident that its working properly.

Ah, that makes sense! Pity for most domains I have setup custom nameservers instead of just using the main name servers, I think a little side project for me in the near future will be to setup a generic domain to use for the nameserver across the various domains hosted on my VPS and then moving to the new VPS. That will also make setting up any future domains easier as well, chalk that up to a lesson learned.

For me to switch from my old VPS plan to one of the new ones, do I need to do an entirely new order or just submit a support ticket?

You need to place a new order, its on a completely different system and theres no way to just "upgrade" you. Once you have moved all your data over, you can then cancel the old account and a credit for the remaining portion of your old VPS will be applied to your account.

Yeah my new one is absolutely battering along. I haven't started serving sites from it yet but updated all the software, Apache, PHP etc, and it fired through everything I threw at it. My couple of test pages that are there at the moment are loading incredibly quickly too. Going to migrate our sites across this weekend and I'll post somewhere here to let you  guys know how I get on!

Yeah, it's great that we got all of those things that MacManX mentioned. I'm now spending less per year, getting more, and it is *still* all covered by referral credit (which shows no obvious sign of running out) :) Now to get everything updated and moved across, which is the slow bit when I was on CentOS4 before :D
