I was wondering if git (the SCM, like SVN/CVS) is supported on the shared hosting accounts?

I SSHd into one and tried
CODE
git --version
and it came back with nothing, so I assume not.

But I wasn't sure if I need to set something in the PATH.

Taken from Sun:

QUOTE
ibboard@sun [~]# which git
/usr/bin/which: no git in (/usr/kerberos/bin:/usr/lib/courier-imap/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/home/ibboard/bin)
ibboard@sun [~]# git --version
-jailshell: git: command not found

I'd say it isn't. They support SVN, but I've never seen any mention of git. If you ask the Techs in a support ticket then Tim may look in to it, but I don't know what his reasons were for choosing SVN (other than it being better than CVS) and how practical/secure it is to run git from a shared hosting server.

A local git install may work, but remember that you're working in a shared environment. If your git server is used a lot or has large files to be diffed then it may end up falling foul of resource usage limits.
