Hello,I'm a former beta tester for (mt) Media Temple's (gs) Grid-Server service. Basically, it's a grid of servers all hooked up to eliminate downtime. It isn't working right.I've tried again and again to get help, and they will usually tell me something like "we're aware of this issue and are actively working on it".

It's been a year. I am now officially fed up.If you google "media temple speed", you will get MY blog as the first result, with my complaints. They just aren't at all what they used to be. I've been a customer since March of 2006.

That site is a simple Joomla! installation. It takes anywhere from 2 to 30 seconds to load. I'm paying $20 a month for garbage. The reliability is horrible. One moment its fast, the other its a speed demon. The above site is a corporate site; I can't afford that.

Does ASO provide EXCELLENT uptime? EXCELLENT speed? EXCELLENT support? If you say anything less than YES! to those, I'm not switching to ASO. Although, a large amount of webmasters swear by ASO.Is there a noticeable speed difference between the SHARED and VPS hosting? Should I go with VPS if I get large volumes of incoming email daily?

Also, if I choose a VPS -- what server will it be on? I'm hearing horror stories about a server called "Isabel" or something..what the hell? I double posted and IPB smooshed both posts together and screwed up the formatting! its all one GIANT parapgrah *fixed

You can get different results from Google depending on which server farm you happen to hit when making your request. Quite often they aren't in synch.

I will be with ASO two years in February. for shared hosting it has been quite speedy. I imagine a VPS would be more so. While my monitoring has registered occasional brief non-connections, they are neither sufficiently long, nor frequenty enough for me to attribute them to any reliability problems at ASO as their nature is as easily explained by momentry routing delays, etc. Support, on the rare occasion I have had a question has been prompt and informative.

That said what one person finds tolerable/acceptable another may not - in any case 100% uptime is like unlimited transfer/storage, ie a goal that is unattainable. As with most things YMMV.

i have two websites on tiny plans on two servers
one went down i submmited a ticket, instant response
in my year i have been here ive had to submit two tickets, the responses were quick and informative
the max waiting time ive ever had on either website was 2-4 seconds and that was running a config cron for a CMS
just look at the testimonals, they say it all, the only bad testimonals seem to stem from user errors rather than being ASOs fault
so i would say yes to all three

The servers with names are the shared servers, not VPS ones. You won't really know what VPS server you're on, and the very nature of VPS means that it won't make much difference what server you're on.

I've been on charlie for the past couple of years, and had a VPS for around a year now, and have never had any serious problems with either touch wood. Excellent uptime, speed and ASO's standard superb level of support are all I've ever had. I'll be working on my second testimonial soon.

The VPS servers are named after Hurricanes IIRC, and aren't listed on the server status page

I had a short job writing code for a site that was hosted on Media Temple. I really had trouble getting SSH running and some of the installed software was pretty ancient. Everything seemed to be very slow. I hope that I never have anything to do with them again.

I'm now waiting for (mt) Media Temple to get back to me. Perhaps they will redeem themselves..
