I have been using Go Daddy as my domain registrar for about a year now, but after registering a new domain yesterday I have to say it was a thoroughly painful process. I was constantly bombarded with offers of adding all sorts of stuff to my domain purchase. I was a little annoyed to find that once I got to the payment screen it had changed the period of registration from 1 year to 2. I had to start the process again.

What I'm after is a registrar that is simple, doesn't try to bombard me with upselling. I don't mind paying a little extra. Suggestions?

I wish ASO did domains.

I use namecheap.com mainly

You might want to give http://active-domain.com/ a look.

Yeah, namecheap are lovely.

And if you're going to buy from namecheap, put EVENLOWER as a coupon code. smile.gif
Oblivion.
NameCheap has an amazingly clean and simple interface wink.gif.

Another vote for NameCheap - straightforward to use.
Subfusion
I also use Namecheap for my domains, they also throw you a free one year subscription of Whois Guard!
Nightclubber
I still use godaddy, i have around 35 domains there. The problem with the "promos" when you buy a domain, is... well, simple to avoid. Just scroll to the bottom and thats it. =D

I do that all the time, its simple.
Matthew
tosdomains.net are good.
Nepherim
I also use GoDaddy, and have no problems. It's pretty easy to bulk update domain entries, and it's easy to see what doamins you have, etc. And yeah they have promos, but like Nightclubber says, moving past them is easy.
rishi

I would recommend Moniker.

Staff is courteous and helpful (like emoticon.gif ) and high security features.

Namecheap works great for me!

Just dont use iPower.. I recommend Godaddy above all other domain registrars. I personally think they have the best control panel and service around.

I realize that I just thought id ring in and warn about ipower. I cant recommend any other registrars because they are the best I have used. That is why I brought them up again. busted_cop.gif

I used godaddy at first. Their interface is too cluttered, and there are a hell of a lot of ads. I use Namecheap now. Simple, straightforward interface, very easy to use.

I use namecheap and 123-reg.

...Although I'm still trying to get 1 domain away from xreg without going the nominet route and paying the £15+ fee

GoDaddy used to indicate in their terms of service that they retained ownership of any domains registered through them. I have not checked in a while, but I would not use a registrar that did this.

Used to use GoDaddy for the longest time, just last week I transfered a few domains over to NameCheap which were about to expire, and I must say I love NameCheap!

Transfers are lightning fast, it took 1 day! That's it! With GoDaddy it takes around a week for transfers to be processed.

The interface is very easy to use, much better and intuitive than GoDaddy's.

Paypal! You can add funds to your account via paypal, which is so nice for those of us who don't have a credit card. It's nice to have a pot of funds therefore when they are set to auto-renew they just renew from the funds already there.

NameCheap gets a 10/10 from me!

does namecheap have all those specials/sales/discounts etc like godaddy?

how much would you typically end up paying with namecheap for a dot com?

Usually 7.99.

Namecheap gets my vote aswell. Also not being funny but the prices godaddy offer have actually seen them lose alot of money they just hope you buy all the trash they offer you on sign up.
Oblivion.
Old topic, but I'm still with NamCheap and their $7.99 domains ('BESTVALUE' code).

I'm a big NameCheap fan.

I don't care about the few dollar differences in price. Service is more important than minor variations in price.

tosdomains.net are good.

I thought I'd second this. I can't say much about their service or features since I haven't really had anything to do past the initial purchase and linking things up at ASO. However, after quickly browsing through what must have been dozens of domain registration sites this was the first I found that met my requirements of accepting PayPal, offering .name domains, and not charging crazy 1997-like domain prices.

I use godaddy primarily. What I like about them is they update their whois records almost instantaneously, which when using the 3rd party DNS servers I have.. switches my ip's around (for dynamic hosting) that I use every now and then real fast.

combined with zoneedit I had my ASO site up and running within minutes, rather than days waiting for dns changes to take effect. (this could apply to any registrar with the correct dns servers set up).

I also have a domain with 1and1, which is the cheapest I've found for a .com (like 6 bucks a year)..however their whois records are still updating from a change I made earlier this morning.

While it's not a big deal, usually. When I'm tweaking dns records (I added a 3rd dns for redundancy for my domains)... I wish the updates would hit faster with 1and1.

The one thing I TRULY like about 1and1 is you can set your domain private (whois information).. for FREE. Godaddy wants like 10/yr or something for it?

Anyway...

Reading up on namecheap i like that they have custom DNS!

Very cool.

Thanks for your input all. Moved across to namecheap last week and couldn't be happier. No more GoDaddy for me smile.gif

For the benefit of anyone else that comes across, I'll also give a vouche for 1&1. I manage over 300 domains with them and other than not being able to make bulk dns edits I'm super satisfied. As mentioned, $5.99 gets you a domain with all taxes and private registration included....$5.99...PERIOD! The management tools are awesome with the once exception I mentioned...bulk changes is the one thing I prefered with GoDaddy (whom I still have a bunch with and really wish I didn't....I like keeping things together and I wish I could have all that extra money I spent back).

As long as this topic is still going, I'll mention Directnic. Whenever you change nameservers, they don't ask you 5 times if you're *really* sure you want to make that change. They also don't give you 3 pages of warnings of the dire consequences of changing nameservers (you know, your websites will break, the earth will fall out of its rotation, a plague of locusts o'er the land, etc).

They charge about $15/year for a dotcom, a little more for others.

Using the coupon code Yaffaspecial gets you $1.02 of any order

I would suggest domainofmyown.com. They are the same company as itsyourdomain.com so you can really use either website with the same information. I have used them for several years and although their prices might be a little higher than godaddy, you don't have to put up with all of the ads and promotions and also you can be sure that when your domain is ready for renewal they aren't going to screw you with higher prices like godaddy will.
KimmiKat
I use both Godaddy and Namecheap. Any new domains I do through NC.
wizdum
Has anyone tried zoneedit to register domains yet?

Seems they are doing it as of last week.
"Each new .com, .net, .org, .info, .us and .biz registration or transfer is just $8.50 per year."

I use only NameCheap
because it accepts Paypal
because its easy to admin domains (I have 30 domains registered with them)
It's really fast to transfer to them

the coupon that works right now is YAFFASPECIAL

I've always used Gandi - They were recommended to me some time a few years ago & I've never had any problems with them. The number of different TLDs that they can handle is fairly limited compared to some companies though.

Use the coupon "HAPPYNEWYEAR" @ NameCheap for $7.99 price smile.gif

I'm a relatively active member of WHT and don't see any majority of people recommending GoDaddy over Namecheap. I'm sure there are people with differing opinions, but that's too much of a generalization.

NameSecure. You're right. GoDaddy's a pain --- in just about every way. I used them for hosting about 4 months. There were so many problems with their network I couldn't stand it any longer.
