Full Version: Serious ftp speed problems
A Small Orange Forums > User-To-User Support > Standard Hosting > Server Issues

Ok, I have posted something similar before, however I realise that the high server loads I experienced occasionally is not connected to the ftp speed problem I get all of the time.

I am getting seriously slow ftp speeds. they are really creating a problem with my site management.

I have created a support ticket, however asmallorange tell me that there isn't a problem and refered me to my ISP.
my ISP assures me there isn't a problem, and I can confirm that I can use ftp servers run by hosting companies with no problem at all, and very fast upload speeds.

I really need help to solve this problem.

I believe aso, that theres not much wrong there end.
I believe pipex my isp that theres not much wrong there end too. sad.gif

So what could the problem be?

Any suggestions on how to fix it?

ALL HELP GREATLY APPRECIATED.

First thing I would recommend is running a traceroute (search the forums if you haven't done that before and need instructions) while your FTP is slow. It's possible the problem isn't your ISP or ASO, but the traffic between the two.

If you post that, tell us, too, which FTP client you are using, just in case anyone here is using that program and knows of any hiccups with it. Ensure you're using passive mode (sometimes listed as PASV).

I use WS_FTP for my ftp software.

I ran this tracert and then tested the FTP speed again. Initially on a large upload of several files, the transfer rate rose to 7 KB/s then creeps down and is now on 0.67 KBps and still decreasing.
by recent standards this is a good day as its normally lower than this by now.

All assistance greatly appreciated.

I get slow speeds but the only thing I can put it on is because we are in the UK.

Would that really affect things that much?

What about you make a test ftp account? Then some of us could test it too.

Great Idea

Userid : speedtest@freedomcafe.com
password: test

I'd really appreciate this if people could test this out and report speeds. (the space is not unlimited so delete anything anyone else uploaded to make room if you need to)

I use Ipswitch WS_FTP for info.

Thanks

No problem here, maxed my line. You’ll have to delete the cabos.zip, as I couldn’t do it myself.

GGRR - this is so annoying.

Its not a problem with aso.
ISP reckons its not them, and certainly everything else with them works aok.
its not a uk thing

What ON EARTH could it be?

what do people think of the tracert I posted above? and could you guys post yours so I can compare times.

Also what ftp progs are you using? - (Could that have anything to do with it?)

Thanks so much for all your help

Can you perform another trace route? I'm curious about why the initial connection in your trace route timed out.

An initial connection timing out with 3 stars doesn't mean anything except that the very first hop doesn't report back. It's a fairly common thing. My 2nd hop (the cable modem, itself), always shows that.

Just to reclarify If I upload to other servers then I get very fast upload speeds which made me think it was an aso problem to begin with, so if it isn't then it has to be a strange problem leaving my isp on the way to aso, which only effects that particular route? All Suggestions welcome.

Where are these other servers based? I max out as well at 30K/B's on your server and on mine (Hurley).

If you want you could try uploading to mine. If it works maybe ASO could move you.
