Full Version: 1and1 won't let me log in to transfer my domain. Well, I also have no idea what I'm doing.

I'm not quite sure what to do, but I want to transfer my domain from 1and1 to here. 1and1 was good, but their limit on SQL databases was a complete deal breaker. I try logging in to their admin page, but it's telling me my account doesn't exist- regardless of whether I type in my domain or account number.

When I registered for ASO, it asked if I was transferring a domain and I said yes and put the domain, and it didn't ask any questions. It seems to be acting like that's my domain now though because that's what it's listing and everything, but the domain doesn't work. I figure I need to do something, but I can't figure out what to do. I tried getting somewhere in 1and1's FAQ and it mentioned something about having to go to another site but it's all a blur.

You're going to have to get in touch win 1 and 1 and ask them why you can't get to the admin pages for your account. Did your account expire?

You should transfer your domain registration away from 1 and 1 to a decent registrar. I use Namecheap as do a lot of other people here.

I just contacted them now, they normally take two to three years to reply.

As far as transferring, that's what I'm trying to do, but I have no idea how to do it. I figure I need to log in, and it hasn't been 30 days and they said they'd keep my domain for me for 30 days before it expires.

However, I registered a .biz account just now with ASO, and I had it add it to my existing account, but now I'm not sure how to make the .biz link go to my actual site. My cPanel says "Main Domain steveyos.com", doesn't mention anything about steveyos.biz.

Guess I might as well ask this here too. Where does my index.html (home page) file go in the FTP stuff? There's so much stuff by default, with 1and1 I could just drop it right in and the only folder was "logs", but ASO's got all sorts of confusing things. I'm sure there's a tutorial on this somewhere so I'll just keep looking for now.

Take a look at this thread http://forums.asmallorange.com/index.php?showtopic=14.

You have to create an add-on domain in cPanel for your biz domain. The files for that domain would go into whatever directory you specify when you create the add-on domain. The files for your main domain go into public_html or www which is really the same directory.

Thanks, I got the situation handled. Everything's running great.

It sounds like the original problem might have been about the purpose of the "I'm transferring a domain" option on registration at ASO. What that says is that you already own a domain elsewhere and you'll handle the migration of it. If it's registered with 1&1 you'd need to move it to another registrar (I'd move .uks for 123-reg.co.uk and .coms etc to someone like NameCheap.com) and then change the name servers to point to the ASO values.

Good luck getting 1&1 to do anything!

I'm just gonna wait until the .com domain gets deleted and hope I can snatch it before someone else does. I can't log into 1and1 and they're not helping me any and I like .biz more anyway.

What registrar did ASO hook me up with when I made the .biz address while registering for hosting? Does ASO register domains themself or do they prefer a site?

Good luck with that. There's normally a good number of different people who have processes running to snap up expired domains within seconds of them being released. Even if they're quite low value someone will snap them up because they can be bought and returned without costing the spammer/squatter anything. Don't forget that losing a .com will a) leave people missing your site when they don't remember it is .biz and assume it is .com and b) give you a bad rep based on the content of the .com site, which used to be yours.

AFAIK ASO don't register domains through another site, at least not in the way of having an account with NameCheap/GoDaddy/etc. The company they buy them from has been mentioned previously (because only a smaller number of companies are actual registrars, while the others buy from them) but I can't remember what it was.

I only had the .com domain for about a week, so everyone who knew about that now knows it's .biz, and it's really not a big deal to me if I don't get it back.

I'll keep those registrar sites in mind though and I'll give it a shot just in case, thank you.
